As the economy downturn continues to drag on for some time, the number of jobless individuals and families only gets bigger. One of the initial costs that they are forced to trim down is health coverage. Jobless individuals simply cannot afford paying COBRA insurance while trying to live from small unemployment money. While they attempt to find new job opportunities, they end up wagering with the danger of having no health care insurance and may only hope that a medical crisis doesn't strike them.

This crowd is a group that typically cannot afford to cover medical bills up front hence the hospital must write off the expense as a loss. This brings into play the hospitals having to raise the cost of services on the insured group just to be able to be in business and operate or break even on profitable criteria. Many think the overdue medical bills will never be paid, but that's not always the actual truth. Hard times are making hospitals evaluate outstanding bills, including ambulance charges as an asset that they are able to get some good money from.

One state that is often a first to do something on any matter is definitely the state of New York. Recently, it's been reported that New York City Fire Department sold off $150 million in overdue debt that commonly resulted because of the uninsured receiving ambulance rides by the GDNY. They are considering selling off an additional $50 million soon. Imagine if out of the $200 million, only 1% of the money was recovered. How many firemen, nurses and so forth can be employed with this extra $2 million dollars each year? Furthermore, just how many services are likely to be improved and because of that how many lives can be saved? A North Carolina Collection Agency has said to have seen a increase in past due medical bills recently resulting from past due ambulance bills. Collection Agencies usually aren't the most popular businesses on the block but in some cases they are needed and the results they generate have good results.

Many uninsured people will simply not pay the debt, regardless of how often a debt collector calls and begs for money. But the fact is, a number of people will begin make payments on debt even if it is only a little amount per month. In our economy, every dollar counts and every job saved has become a victory. As always, every life saved is the biggest victory of all.
